Once upon a time, I wanted so much a big, VERY big bag, able to hold lots of things. Colorful, chunky, durable and strong. And no lining inside! The lining is the first thing in a bag to suffer damage – it gets broken, comes unstitched, and sooner or later, here and there little holes will show up on it. Lining is the main responsible of the usual EXTENSIBILITY defect concerning a bag: if I make a bag by crochet or knitting, my goal being to make an EXTREMELY extensible bag, but I MUST put a lining in it because a crochet or knitted bag tends to deform a lot under stress… Well, a lining CANNOT strech out endlessly, the only chance you have is to make it very large but in any case, it will NEVER follow the natural stretching movements of the crochet/knitted bag into which it has been sewn, on the contrary it will always put a limit to a crochet/knitted bag extensibility! So, a bag that seems to hold a certain amount of things, due to its lining, will be able to hold just A PART of this certain amount. But I DID want to create a versatile bag. Able to stretch out a lot without deforming. Moreover, I hate to sew. I don’t like doing it AND I’m not very capable of doing it. SO, I thought to project a CROCHET bag with NO LINING inside. I choose crochet because it’s a technique with which can be produced things much more tough and durable than by knitting, and far less subject to deformation.
I began thinking about it in 2009. I kept on thinking, designing, making, experimenting, un-making, re-experimenting, thinking and thinking again. It wasn’t an easy project to achieve at all. But at last, an idea struck me: taking my chunky squares and crocheting them together in pairs, putting in the middle a filling, and in particular, that white, soft, plumpy polyester filling which is normally used to make quilts and cushions. Well, I did it! And it worked GREAT!
My first model of tote bag – which I renamed Mary Shopping bag – had been a success. I had my BIG bag at last, large, practical and COMFORTABLE! I didn’t feel – AT LAST! – any more pain in my shoulders, not even when I was carrying it around full of everything, books, honey jars, dvd cases, water and juice bottles, sweaters and K-Way jackets and so on, so on, so on, thanks to the idea of filling ALSO the handles with soft polyester. Because when you decide to design a bag, and begin working at it, you realize that the most difficult parts to be made are handles and… bottoms. With my first tote bag I had solved the problems of extensibility, lack of lining and painful handles, but NOT YET that of bottom, as its particular shape didn’t require a bottom at all.
BUT! I’d have liked to invent also a tiny chunky-plumpy minibag, to keep in my hands like a little jewel, to use when I wouldn’t feel like keeping something on my shoulders or maybe when having the need to walk freely and faster – I’m a great walker, I go almost everywhere to do almost everything I’ve got to do, simply by walking. The minibag was going to have a bottom, and I was guessing if my little chunky squares, doubled and filled with polyester, would be suitable to make a tough bottom, resistant to stretching, even in case I’d put in the bag something REALLY heavy (for example, my huge bunch of keys TOGETHER WITH my purse full of cardboard egle.is business cards). Ok. All went well! All people who see how many things I can carry in my minibag – I’m talking about the Funny Chic model – and it always keeps its shape, or better, it becomes more round and plump, so MORE pretty, well all those people tend to amaze first, and congratulate me then. Ever. “Thank you, thank you so much” I reply, but it has been a hard nut to crack, a hard-won achievement, considering that I’ve been working to my SoftBags project for almost three years, all right, NOT all days, all day long, but anyway they’ve been almost three YEARS of hard working on the project, of continuous development and experimentation. I’m saying this to point out my CONTINUOUS effort in producing BOTH beautiful and high quality things, things that can be really USED in everyday life, useful, practical, heavy-duty and comfortable for your hands and shoulders. My SoftBags have been desired, conceived, designed, made, tested, un-made, re-made, re-tested by me, until when I got products that really WORK. Maybe you’re thinking I’m so boringly fuSSy (?). Actually, I’m just PASSIONED (!). Yes it’s true, I swear it is, this is not fussiness, it’s just pure passion, BURNING passion ;)
And this is the story. After the Mary Shopping Bag, which was the starting point of my SoftBags project, came the Funny Chics and the Little Witches, the minis, the messengers, the briefcases and, to properly match all the SoftBags models, the coin purses and pouches, and then, finally, the Special Ones, my tiny art bags made with handspun yarn. It has been a fantastic journey, an extremely interesting experience that made me able to produce crochet bags which are definitely innovative, modern, original and, last but not least, exclusive.
Sometimes, someone asks me if patterns of my SoftBags will be available. Why not? I’m thinking about it. This, too, it won’t be an easy project to be achieved, but little by little it will take shape. It will be a pleasure for me to offer a product dedicated to people who love MAKING crochet. Volevo una borsa grande, grandissima, in grado di contenere tanto, di tutto. Vivace, coloratissima, resistente. Che non avesse una fodera! La fodera è la prima cosa che si rompe, si scuce, si buca, si deteriora insomma. Ed è proprio la fodera la principale responsabile del solito difetto di ESTENSIBILITA’ di una borsa: se io faccio una borsa all’uncinetto o a maglia, e la faccio con lo scopo di avere una borsa che sia in grado di “allargarsi”, aumentando la sua capienza in caso di necessità, ma poi ci DEVO mettere una fodera perché altrimenti la borsa tende a DEFORMARSI troppo, insomma… La fodera NON può estendersi all’infinito, l’unica possibilità è quella di studiarla in modo che sia “abbondante”, ma in ogni caso non seguirà MAI le movenze naturali della borsa all’uncinetto o a maglia che accompagna, anzi le limiterà in maniera sempre molto evidente! E così, una borsa che sembra possa contenere un TOT, ebbene con la fodera riuscirà alla fine a contenere solo una parte di quel TOT. Ma IO volevo una borsa eclettica. Che si estendesse moltissimo, senza deformarsi. Inoltre, odio cucire. Non mi piace e non mi riesce bene. QUINDI, ho pensato di progettare una borsa interamente fatta ALL’UNCINETTO (perché più resistente della maglia e meno sensibile alle deformazioni) e SENZA FODERA.
Ho iniziato a pensarci nel 2009. Ho pensato, progettato, fatto, sperimentato, disfatto, risperimentato, pensato e ripensato. Non era una cosa facile da realizzare, anzi. Poi finalmente mi è venuta un’idea: accoppiare le mie piastrelline a due a due, mettendo nel mezzo l’imbottitura che serve per fare le trapunte e i cuscini. La candida imbottitura in poliestere che si trova tranquillamente in ogni merceria, e che io chiamo voluttuosamente “flufferone”. Beh, ha funzionato!
Il mio primo modello di tote bag (da me ribattezzato Mary Shopping Bag) è stato un successone. FINALMENTE avevo la MIA borsa ENORME e pratica, e finalmente NON avevo più male alle spalle, neanche quando la trasportavo riempita di tutto, libri, vasetti di miele, maglioni e K-Way per la montagna, ecc ecc, grazie alla trovata di imbottire ANCHE le piastrelline dei manici. Eh sì, perché quando si vuole realizzare una borsa, le parti più difficili, le più delicate in assoluto, sono proprio i manici, le maniglie e… il fondo. Con la mia shopping bag avevo risolto il problema dell’estensibilità, della mancanza di fodera e dei manici spaccaspalle, ma NON quella del fondo, dal momento che la forma del modello rendeva il problema del fondo irrilevante.
PERO’ PERO’ PERO’… volevo anche inventare una minibag tutta cicciotta, da tenere in mano come un gioiellino, da usare in quelle occasioni in cui manca la voglia di tenere qualcosa sulle spalle e magari c’è invece quella di essere più libera di camminare veloce (sono una gran camminatrice, mi muovo quasi sempre a piedi per andare praticamente ovunque). La minibag avrebbe avuto un fondo, e mi chiedevo se le mie piastrelline imbottite avrebbero fatto bene la loro parte di sostegno, anche nel caso in cui avessi inserito nella borsa qualcosa di pesante (ad es, il mio mazzo di chiavi di San Pietro PIU’ il portafoglio pieno zeppo di biglietti da visita egle.is in cartoncino pesante). Ok. E’ andato tutto bene! Tutti quelli che vedono quante cose riesco a farci stare nella mia minibag (sto parlando più precisamente del modello Funny Chic) e lei rimane sempre bella in forma, anzi diventa più cicciottolosa e quindi mOOOlto più carina, stupiscono e si congratulano. Grazie grazie, dico io, ma è stata comunque una conquista sudatissima, se pensate che alla realizzazione del progetto Morbidone ci ho lavorato per circa tre anni, d’accordo, non tutti i giorni di fila uno dietro all’altro, ma in ogni caso sempre di quasi tre anni di lavoro, cogitamenti ed esperimenti si è trattato. Questo lo dico per sottolineare il mio impegno COSTANTE nel realizzare cose belle e di alta qualità, cose che si possono UTILIZZARE davvero, che sono utili, pratiche, resistenti e confortevoli da tenere in mano e sulle spalle. Voglio sottolineare che le mie Morbidone le ho desiderate, pensate, studiate, progettate, realizzate, testate, distrutte, ri-realizzate, ri-testate, fino a quando non ho ottenuto un prodotto che funzionasse DAVVERO. Vi sembrerò pignola (?). In effetti, sono solo APPASSIONATA (!). Davvero, non è pignoleria, ma pura ardente PASSIONE ;)
E questa è la storia delle mie Morbidone. Dopo la Mary Shopping Bag, che è stata il punto di partenza di questo viaggio, sono nate le Funny Chic e le Borse Streghetta, le mini, le messenger, le cartelle morbide e, a delizioso accompagnamento di tutti i modelli di Morbidona, i borsellini e i portamonete e infine, Le Speciali, piccole borse d’arte realizzate con filati fatti a mano col fuso. E’ stato un viaggio fantastico che ha portato alla realizzazione di modelli di borsa-crochet decisamente innovativi, moderni, originali e soprattutto esclusivi.
Qualcuno ogni tanto mi chiede se è possibile avere il pattern delle mie Morbidone. Perché no? Ci sto pensando. Anche questo progetto non sarà facile da realizzare, ma piano piano prenderà forma. Sarà un piacere proporre anche un prodotto dedicato a chi ama FARE l’uncinetto. Occhio ai nuovi post che pubblicherò su questo blog :)
